The three credible directories that actually vet the schools they list. Pick the one that matches who you are — not all yards are inspected, and these three are.
The gold standard. The BHS physically inspects every approved yard for welfare, safety, instructor qualifications and horse condition. The largest and most trusted UK directory. Best starting point for adults and serious learners.
Search BHS Pathfinder → pathfinder.bhs.org.uk ABRS Independent cross-checkA separate, smaller member directory. ABRS-approved schools meet a different set of standards. Useful as a cross-check against the BHS list — yards in both directories are a stronger signal than yards in just one.
Search ABRS → abrs-info.org PC Best for kidsLocal branches and Centres for children who don't yet own a pony. Structured progression badges, group activities, and a clear path beyond just hour-long lessons. The default choice for most families starting out.
Find your local Pony Club → pcuk.orgEach directory suits a slightly different person. If you're not sure, start with BHS.
| Directory | Best for | What gets you listed |
|---|---|---|
| BHS Approved | Adults, serious learners, anyone who wants the highest welfare standard | Pass a BHS physical inspection (yard, horses, instructors) |
| ABRS Member | Cross-checking BHS choices, regional variety | ABRS membership and approval scheme |
| Pony Club | Children, families, structured progression | Affiliated branch or PC Centre status |

Read the lessons guide →We deliberately don't list individual schools here. Vetting riding yards needs physical inspection, and BHS, ABRS and the Pony Club already do that. Sending you straight to their official directories is the most reliable way to find a credible yard near you. We collect anonymous data on which directory you choose so we can improve this page over time.
